San Marco's hermitage, 2 Kilometers away from downtown Aidone, is the oldest church in the centre of Sicily. It is a rare example of Romanic architecture, built in the local stone, which dates back to the time of Count Ruggero (1100 d.c.) who liberated the island from the Arabic hegemony, and restore Christianity. Not used for worship since the second half of the nineteenth century and recentely renovated, San Marco's hermitage consists of a wide nave, a central projecting apse, two wonderfully crafted portals, gothic windows, and wooden roof trusses.

Today, San Marco's hermitage, originally part of a wide byzantine monastery, stands out in its solitude and magnificence on a hill of olives. A nearby rustic building, provided with all essential utilities (kitchen, toilets, and two bed rooms) is used as an accomodation facility for guests.
